It's all Hergé's fault. Tintin is a reporter, so I asked for a camera and a notebook for Christmas. I was seven, and I thought that it would make me a journalist. Tintin never writes down anything though, and it's a movie camera that's packed in the Ford T on the cover of “Tintin au Congo”. I didn't do much writing either, but I used the 2"x3" bakélite Photax , then dad's old Leica, built a plywood and meccano enlarger, developped prints in soup plates, eagerly devoured technical books, etc... A game : place your viewpoint in such a manner that you generate alignments and tangencies with the the things you look at... Another game : during breakfast, observe the rays of early sunlight play on the wall or ceiling, as they're reflected on the trembling surface of the cocoa in your bowl. At age 20, instead of attending the Vaugirard photo school, I was lucky enough to become assistant to Jean-Claude Valette, a master, to whom I owe my understanding of light, and also this aphorism: "in photography, you must exagerate in direction of truth." I reckon he meant one's own truth, which is yet to be found, a work in itself... Pictures, and more pictures... On film or digital, only results matter. I used to love black and white lab work, and digital has given me the control on prints that I missed with ektachrome. I print myself again, 100% inkjet, with pigment inks on pure cotton paper... But when shooting, it's still 50/50, large formats on film, while digital cameras have replaced 35 mm.
